Leading from the Front – A Night Shift Reflection
Last night’s shift in the ware wash reminded me why I still love what I do.
Despite being 14 staff short, the team pulled together—and we did more than just get through the night. We accomplished everything we set out to do. No delays, no major issues. Just solid teamwork and a clear focus.
What made the difference?
I made a conscious choice to stay present on the shop floor—not just as a supervisor, but as a guide. I didn’t just observe; I walked with my team. I offered support, stepped in when needed, clarified tasks, and simply showed up beside them.
There’s something powerful about being physically present when the pressure is on. You feel the rhythm of the work. You notice the small things. You help solve problems before they become issues. You also remind your team that you’re in it with them—not above them.
It wasn’t a perfect night. But it was a successful one.
And I believe success came because we led from the front, not from behind a desk. The energy shifted when guidance replaced instruction. That sense of shared effort brought the team together.
It’s nights like these that show how leadership is often quiet, sometimes invisible—but always felt.
